In order to be absolutely correct, one should remove their hat, stand at attention, and place the right hand over their heart. This is the correct way too show respect to the flag during the national anthem and the pledge of allegiance. Not to place one's hand over their heart is disrespectful to the flag and the country. An example of this sort of disrespect the shown in the photograph above. The man at the end doesn't even have enough respect to stand up straight, let alone put his hand over his heart, he's a disgrace.
